Feminism is the belief that women and men are equal and should be valued equally and have equal rights. Both men and women agree that we have more in common when reason and understanding are used to determine the causes and consequences of gender inequality. Marriage is believed to enforce male dominance according to Friedrich Engles and Karl Marx. Men of the capitalist class instituted monogamous marriage (a gendered institution) so that they could be certain of the paternity of their offspring, especially sons, whom they wanted to inherit their wealth.

| JonaThomallari | About Slavery from Mother Jones Article Response | 0 | May 8 2009, 8:31 PM EDT by JonaThomallari | ||||

I read the article about slavery from Mother Jones. The article was interesting because I myself will admit that I too looked at prostitution as sex trafficking, but I do believe that slavery is not only involved with sex but many other things. Social stratification involves the hierarchical arrangement of large groups based on control over basic resources, and when this is at its extreme form it defines slavery by people owning other people. With this definition, I believe that slavery isn’t just sex trafficking but many other things like people working for other people without a choice; it’s the selling, trading and buying of human life.
How social stratification play into this article is that it arranges large groups hierarchal based on control over basic resources and thus with that control and power one can chose to commit slavery because they have the resources and money to do what they want. People that chose to be deviant and condone to slavery. If one is at a higher social stratification, they would most likely not have to face slavery, compared to those that are born into it. Feminism also plays a role in the article because it breaks the notion that men and women are equal and should have equal rights. Most trafficking when it comes to women is powered by men because they don’t see women as equals but as something that can make profit, even if it’s consensual. Why this might be happening is pretty much people trying to save money and/ or make money to achieve a higher social stratification in their lives. |

Video 2 –was hard to hear but Mary Patillo she really open my eye with her topic about poor black communities. I didn’t realize that people were so close minded to say a statement like Mary heard on her bus tour “that you may think this is a white neighborhood “ just because the of the up keep of the community . When I was listing to the video I remembered a term in the book role expectation. I think that when someone go to or drive throw a different community other then their own many people expectation are wrong with who lives there. Too many people judge a book by its cover.

Somehow the Mary Patillo thread disappeared. Ergo, a new one.
Listening to this conversation, can you see how Mary's biography drove her own sociological investigations? Have you noticed our racially divided neighborhoods? Are there assumptions you've run into in the past that tacitly state 'how things are' in a region that have surprised you?

I like how he takes something that cant be seen, such as feeling, and makes a model to explain it in scientific terms and images. I also was amazed at how a computer can take millions of information and analyze it to figure out human emotions as well as how many emotions we have, I never really gave that a thought. Even thought its kind of creepy that the people don't know their being watched, I like that the answers and results are true. I also like how it tries to teach people that we are all connected and live under one earth, no matter how diverse we are, we all share common emotions, life events and more.

I was completely blown away by the way Jonathan uses modern technology to research and interact with society. His methods of data collection on people's feeling are absolutely phenomenal. He actually monitors people without them even knowing that it is happening. I believe this is the best way to get a true result because the subjects are behaving naturally and unscripted. I was also impressed with the Universe website he created....it is a sociological database that allows anyone to research their current interest around the world. I took it upon myself to use this website and looked up the word "Christian". I found so many articles and events that have occurred around the world in the PAST
WEEK! Wow....this website is definitely one to recommend for sociology students. I really did appreciate this video as a learning experience because it is one that I plan to continue to use on my free time. Thank you Beth! |

The group will be held at Borders in Wheaton (http://www.borders.com/online/store/StoreDetailView_173) at 12 noon. Anyone is welcome to come and join. Just cut and paste this link for directions. ALSO! Please feel free to post questions you might have for the test here so that we can all gather our thoughts and present them to Beth on Tuesday. I was just wondering if anyone was interested in starting a study group....between juggling 2 jobs and 3 classes....this can all get overwhelming. Um so if anyone is interested let me know. My idea was that we could perhaps divide the chapters, chapter, assignment (depending on how many of us) and then bring our notes together on a week day evening when time allows. Then do the questions at the back of the chapter together. This would allow us to spend sufficient time on research for our paper that is due SOON! Anyone? Just a thought.

This video was interesting to me. I did not realize how much you could do with data. I did not know you could take data from people without them know it. However, on other hand it did not surprise me that it was done either. I am not sure which one is scarier to me. Knowing that everything you do these days is so easy take from you, with a stroke of a key. It was cool what he did with the stars and how he made the world into social star and anyone could see it.

For the first article, I realized that people try to act “norm” in front of people all the time. Nevertheless, when you get home your crazy, mad, sad, or just plan like everyone else. Eventually everyone blends in together. At the end of the day it does not, matter how you act or over act it is the same everywhere.
As for the second article, it was scary to think that with power or with out power how much a person could really change. It was amazing that it only toke one social behavior to change those men from good to dad. They got the full effect of imprisonment. |
